Pricing · Voice assistants

What an AI voice assistant costs — and what it saves.

A voice assistant is the one AI build with a genuinely obvious payback: every missed call is a lost customer, and most small businesses miss a lot of them. The build cost is only half the price question, though — the other half is per-minute charges that rarely appear in the headline quote.

The two-part cost nobody explains clearly

Voice has a build cost and a running cost, and vendors quote whichever one flatters them. The build is the work of teaching the assistant your business, your booking rules and your escalation policy. The running cost is telephony and speech processing, billed per minute of conversation — usually cents, but cents that multiply by call volume.

When you compare quotes, force both into the open. Ask: what is the one-time build, what is the per-minute or per-call rate, and at my actual call volume, what is the monthly bill? A cheap build with an expensive per-minute rate is not cheap.

What makes voice harder than chat

Latency is the whole game. In text, a two-second pause is invisible. On a phone call it is the moment the caller thinks the line has dropped. That constraint shapes everything: how much the assistant can look up mid-sentence, how it handles interruption, how it recovers when it mishears a name.

The second hard part is knowing when to stop. A voice assistant that confidently answers a question it should have escalated does more damage than one that says "let me get someone who can help with that" and transfers cleanly. Getting the handoff right is most of the build quality.

What good looks like

  • It answers on the first ring, every time — including at 9pm and on Sunday, which is when a meaningful share of enquiries arrive.
  • It books directly into your real calendar, not into a queue somebody re-keys in the morning.
  • It knows its limits and transfers with context attached, so the caller does not repeat themselves.
  • Every call is logged and reviewable, so you can hear what it actually said rather than trusting a dashboard.

The payback maths

Do this calculation with your own numbers before you buy anything. Take your missed calls per week, multiply by the share that would have become customers, multiply by your average customer value. Most owners are surprised by the annual figure. If that number does not comfortably clear the build plus a year of running cost, do not buy a voice assistant — buy something else.
