Voice AI agents in 2026: what changed, and where they pay off.

Two years ago an AI phone agent was easy to spot: the pause before every answer gave it away. This year the major labs shipped real-time speech models, and the pause is mostly gone. That changes where voice agents make sense.

Where voice pays

High call volume, routine requests and a cost to every missed call — clinics, trades, salons, property offices. Where it doesn’t: complex sales, and anything emotional or urgent.

What changed

Lower latency, better handling of interruptions, and calls that switch language mid-conversation. Our own receptionist, Vozzy, answers in English, Hindi and Tamil.

The economics

A business taking 600 calls a month at four minutes each spends about 40 hours of staff time on the phone. The bigger number is usually the calls nobody answers — after hours, at lunch, in a rush — each one a booking that went somewhere else.

What to measure

Calls answered, bookings made, time to booking, handoffs to people and caller satisfaction. If a vendor cannot show you those for your own line within two weeks, it is not working.

Where to be careful

Tell callers they are speaking to an AI. Route anything urgent to a person. Keep recordings and transcripts under your control.

A worked example: a dental practice

A practice with one receptionist takes around 600 calls a month and misses many at lunch and after five. A voice agent answers every call in the practice’s name, offers real appointment slots, moves bookings, and passes anything clinical to the team with notes. The receptionist gets about 40 hours a month back; the practice stops losing the patients who would have called the next practice on the list.

What it costs

A live product like Vozzy starts at $299 a month with a free trial. A voice assistant built around your own systems and scripts is a fixed-price build from $3,500. Compare either to the value of the bookings you currently miss, not only to staff hours.

Common mistakes

Over-scripting. Rigid call trees defeat the point of natural conversation. Give the agent clear rules and real data instead.

No measurement. If you do not know how many calls you missed before, you cannot show what the agent recovered.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI voice receptionist cost?

Hosted products start from a few hundred dollars a month — Vozzy is from $299 — while a voice assistant built around your systems is a fixed-price build, from $3,500 in our pricing.

Do callers know they are talking to an AI?

They should. Good practice — and in some places the law — is to disclose it at the start of the call.

What can a voice AI agent handle?

Routine calls: questions about hours and services, bookings, rescheduling and reminders. Complex sales, emotional conversations and urgent issues should go to a person.
